Meet Portia G, an American R&B/Soul singer, with nearly 40 years of experience in the music industry. When the Sweet Inspirations were searching for a new singer to join their group, Portia Griffin was chosen as the new member to the all women’s group in 1994. Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother, was the leader of the Sweet Inspirations that was originally formed as a gospel group that went on to do backup for Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin as well as hundreds of gold records in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
In 1979, Portia Griffin moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of Pittsburgh to pursue her professional music career. There she met Jeffrey Osborne, and got the opportunity to join his band. She worked in his band for 18 years. As a first call background vocalist in the LA studio scene, Portia has performed on over 100 albums with various artists such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones to name a few.
Portia G is currently working on her own solo album “Portia Faces Life”. After 35 years, she has reconnected with Makoto Horiuchi, a Japanese-American composer/writer who was an artist on Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records.Portia G was a featured singer on Makoto’s 2nd album “Nside”,
and they are now working her new solo album project. Look for her album, “Portia Faces Life” soon to be released on KulTone Records. Portia Faces Life is an eclectic mix of music that we heard and performed.
